IV. "ANYTIME GOODIES": Reminder/Guidelines for HOW you should be annotating in your book while reading, as taught in class:
Whenever you see examples of figurative language, use a highlighter to highlight them, and mark a letter next to it:
metaphor (M)
simile (S)
hyperbole (H)
personification (P)
onomatopoeia (O)
Put a BOX around examples or details related to the setting (time & place)
Double-underline examples or details that provide characterization. In the margin, write a note (reflection, comment, name, explanation) about what this example is showing (what it says about the character).
WHY should you take annotated notes while reading?
to connect and interact with the author & his/her book's characters and plot.
to analyze, critique and/or appreciate an author's use of figurative language and plot development.
to challenge yourself to "scavenger hunt" for examples of figurative language.
to create & organize notes (in your own words; your own writing) to refer back to later.
to log your reactions (reflections) and notes before you forget them.
to identify support for characterization and setting--so that it's faster & easier to find them later when you're asked to support opinions/facts with examples.
to develop a practice that can be extremely helpful in high school and college.
